The Green Heron is a small, compact bird often seen along the edges of ponds and marshes, perched quietly and waiting for a fish or frog to come close. Its chestnut neck and piercing yellow eyes contrast with wings that shimmer in iridescent dark green, each feather neatly edged in white. Green Herons are also one of the few birds known to use tools, sometimes dropping insects, twigs, or feathers on the water’s surface to lure in prey. I wanted to capture that quiet, watchful presence in this collage, layering and stitching fabric until the bird’s posture and markings came to life. From a distance the piece reads as a painting, but up close you can see the fabric piecing and topstitching that hold it together. This work will be part of my upcoming exhibition at the Great Lakes Aquarium (November 4, 2025 – January 4, 2026).
