This piece was inspired by my first canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Wilderness as a teenager. I remember discovering wild gooseberries growing along the shore—small, tart, and surprisingly delicious. We added them to our morning oatmeal, cooked over a campfire on cool, foggy mornings. It was simple food, made special by the place and the moment.
I used hand-dyed fabrics to capture the soft greens of the berries, set against an unbleached canvas background to reflect the raw beauty of the wilderness. A weathered cedar frame completes the piece, echoing the quiet strength of the Northwoods.
